Keys to Lost Musical Moments

At the end of 2009, Matt and Leslie of the Keys to LOST podcast released a 25 Rockin’ Musical Moments Holiday Special. I was proud to be included in that show, and my musical moment was the scene in the pilot episode described below:

[Shot of Michael holding something up (some kind of tarp?) under some debris, puts his arm on Walt’s shoulder. Shot of Locke alone on the beach in a sort of meditation pose (music is sort of bittersweet). Locke holds his arms out, turns his face up to the rain, seems happy; we see the Monster in the jungle by the beach. Claire and Rose see it.]

CLAIRE: There it is again.

ROSE: Oh my god.

(although I also had in mind the scene in all “All the Best Cowboys have Daddy Issues” when Locke predicts the rain and behaves similarly)

The song I felt best captured this/these moment(s) was But Not Tonight by Depeche Mode.

The key lyrics being …

Oh God it’s raining
But I’m not complaining
It’s filling me up with new life
The stars in the sky
Bring tears to my eyes
They’re lighting my way tonight
And I haven’t felt so alive
In years

The moon
Is shining in the sky
Reminding me
Of so many other nights
When my eyes had been so red
I’d been mistaken for dead
But not tonight

As I said in Matt and Leslie’s podcast, I feel like those scenes are significant because they are some of the earliest glimpses we get of John’s special connection to the island. And we see, quite literally, that the island has renewed him… “filling him up with new life.”

Plus, given Locke’s apparent reincarnation in Season 5, the final stanza seems particularly applicable.

There are other great musical moments in LOST (be sure to check out the Keys to Lost episode and the podcast in general, if you haven’t already), but that was one scene which has an automatic soundtrack in my head every time I see it. And so, that was my musical moment.
