The Lesson Learned is Never Give Up on Your Theories

Posted in ReThinking LOST, Theories with tags , , , , , , , , on April 6, 2010 by Scott Copperman

Wow, we may have actually gotten something right!

**Be warned, this entry makes reference to the episode of LOST which aired Tues, April 6 in the USA **

Spoilers for that April 6 episode follow…

If you’re a fan of our ReThinking LOST podcast, and you listened to our preseason 6 prediction show, (I think that’s where it was) then you heard Elton and I discuss the possibility that our Losties might be living in an Alternate Reality post-incident and that it might unravel as one by one they found themselves with the sneaking suspicioin it just didn’t feel right.

Well, that’s starting to look like that might be the case with the Flash Sideways.

(admittedly, I did bail on this theory about 4 episodes ago, but I will happily point out that we did think this was the route it might go back before the season started)

I will also posit that the Flash Sideways are the result of the incident AND consequently the MIB getting set free. I find it interesting that when Desmond touched Penny’s hand, he snapped back to the island. And when he followed Sayid, the was back in the Flash Sideways.

So, when Widmore says all that Desmond and Jin love will be gone, it’s because the Flash Sideways life will result. The MIB is indeed planning to fulfill his promises, by bringing about the Flash Sideways timeline.

Good stuff… my question is “why does Hawking say that Desmond isn’t ready to look for Penny yet?”

Some questions about Charles Widmore

Posted in Observations, Some wonderings I don't really believe with tags , , on January 25, 2010 by Scott Copperman

As we approach the start of season 6, people are getting excited. I am too.

We’ve already recorded our last hiatus episode of ReThinking LOST (the predictions episode will be out by Thursday), so this blog will be a great place for me to share the couple of last minute musings I have.

Today I’d like to talk a bit about Charles Widmore.

Charles was once co-leader of the Others. He was exiled, and hasn’t been back to the island since (as far as we know).

Here are some questions I have…

When we saw Widmore at his youngest, was he in charge of the others? It didn’t seem so. If so, by what right? If not, who was in charge and how did Charles come to be the man?

When he was a leader of the group, did he interact with Jacob? Could he see/hear him? Was his relationship with Jacob better than Bens?

Why couldn’t Widmore get back to the island?  He clearly knew about the Lamppost (he told Desmond that was where Hawking was) … is it that the island would not have allowed him back? Why didn’t Widmore get on the freighter (I suspect it’s partly because he knew how that all would play out)?

Who is Penny’s mother? Many people assume Penny is the child Widmore fathered while off island. Some think it could be Locke. What do you think?

How did Widmore become so wealthy? Is that part of being exiled? What are Widmore’s connections to Dharma, Hanso, Paik? Isn’t the timing of this all kind of odd? Widmore was still on island 16 years before the Losties arrived. That’s a lot of power that man has acquired in a very short amount of time.

Naomi had a picture of Desmond and Penny, which suggests Widmore knew Desmond was on the island. How? Did he manipulate Desmond to be there?

I have a feeling Widmore will play a lesser role in Season 6. That would be disappointing, because I think TPTB spent a lot of time setting him up as the “bad guy if it’s not Ben.” And I don’t think Ben’s a bad guy – not at his core.

Lost in 8:15 – Where’s Alex?

Posted in Observations, ReThinking LOST, Uncategorized with tags , , , , , , , , , on January 21, 2010 by Scott Copperman

Back on January 12th we recorded what will likely become Episode 23 of ReThinking LOST. The episode is finally going to be released for another week or so, and I don’t want to spoil it, so…  I’m not going to go into all the things we talked about.

However, I will tell you this. Elton McManus, Ross Cleaver, and I spent an hour looking at the original LOST in 8:15 video and the more recent release which covers seasons 1 – 5 instead of only 1-3. The differences were intriguing and if this truly is “what you need to know” going into Season 6, then it suggests many things that people have spent a lot of time analyzing are not important at all.

Case in point (and I’m fairly sure this did not even make it into our discussion)… Alex (Rousseau’s daughter, raised by Ben) does not appear anywhere in either video. Her exclusion from the most recent video suggests that Ben’s issues with Widmore may not play a major role in Season 6.

Can’t you just picture how easy it would have been to have that fast talking woman say “Widmore sent Kimi. Kimi killed Alex. Ben cried. Ben found Widmore and made a promise. “BEN: I’m here, Charles, to tell you that I’m going to kill your daughter. Penelope, is it? And once she’s gone… once she’s dead… then you’ll understand how I feel. And you’ll wish you hadn’t changed the rules.” Ben finds Penny. (shot of young Charlie calling for Mommy). Ben can’t do it.”

Look at this study of the confrontation scene from Vozzek’s web site. Hmm… “the shape of things to come?” Apparently not.

If it turns out that this conflict is over and done with , I think that tells us two things…

  1. Pennys’ lineage as a Widmore, Danielle and Alex, and Ben’s role as a father are not going to be key parts of Season 6.
  2. Widmore is not THE bad guy. He may be a pawn of, but just as I theorize Ben is a good guy with bad people skills… the same may be true of Widmore. But he is NOT the antagonist in our main story of LOST.

We go into this a bit more in next week’s Season 6 Predictions episode of ReThinking LOST, but that won’t be out until after the LOST in 8:15 analysis is released.

So, please be sure to check out that episode and let me know what you think about this and other omissions.
